Waffle
Waffle is a daily word puzzle shaped like its name: six five-letter words, three across and three down, woven into a grid with holes. Every letter is already on the board but scrambled, and you solve it by swapping pairs of tiles. The colours follow Wordle’s logic — green for the right spot, yellow for a letter that belongs elsewhere in its word, grey for neither — and you have fifteen swaps to finish. The best possible solve uses ten, and every swap left over earns a star. James Robinson launched it in 2022, joining Wordle’s colours to the old pleasure of the anagram, and there is now a larger Deluxe Waffle once a week. It suits confident readers of about ten and up. The tricky part is a yellow tile where an across word and a down word cross: it can belong to either, and the game does not say which.

Start Where the Words Cross
A daily Waffle takes five to ten minutes, a little longer when two people share one screen. Begin with the nine tiles where two words cross, because a correct letter there helps both. Look first for swaps that turn both tiles green at once; they are the quickest way to save stars. When only a few tiles remain, read the six words aloud — younger players often spot them faster than adults do.
